Carolyn's sunflowers

This spring, we planted a bunch of sunflower seeds, and lo and behold, a bunch of sunflowers sprouted from those very seeds. There are probably 25 of them that have already bloomed, with a whole bunch more on the way.

We've taken to calling them Carolyn's sunflowers, and we take her out just about every day to look at her sunflowers. She pretends like she doesn't care -- and sometimes she won't even look directly at them -- but we know she thinks they're awesome. Here are a few pics of them from the best photographer that Carolyn knows: her mom.

Month in Review: Carolyn's second month

Today Carolyn is two months old. Time is just flying by, and she is growing so much -- she's four pounds heavier now than when she was born! She's currently 9 lbs 7 oz, 22 3/4 in long, and has a head circumference of 39 cm, so she's tall and skinny... hmm... who does that sound like? (I was talking about Kristen, not me!)

Anyway, let's recap the past month:

Spiritual cleansing, disease prevention, and home improvement

On Sunday, we took Carolyn to the very same church where Kristen and I were married -- St. Alphonsus in Hopewell, NJ -- to be baptized. Cousin Jake was baptized too. Carolyn, never one to fool around, decided to sleep through the entire ceremony, except for the part where water was poured over her head. For that part, she opened up her eyes, gave out a little whine, then went back to sleep. I can't really blame her, because the rest of the ceremony was essentially a lengthy, meandering, seemingly stream-of-consciousness sermon by the deacon. And he's no Kerouac.

Be on the lookout for video in the next few days (or weeks, depending on when I get to it). In the meantime, check out the pictures in the Carolyn's Baptism photo album. Carolyn can't type yet, but she wishes to thank her Aunt Lauren and Uncle Mike for being her godparents and giving her the wonderful gown you see in the photo above.

On Monday, it was time for Carolyn's two-month checkup at the doctor. Everybody knows what that means: Shots. And not the good kind that come in the tiny little glasses. All in all, Carolyn was a true sport about it. The rotavirus vaccine was actually a liquid that she drank down, and probably would have asked for more if she could. Then needle #1 goes in. A beat. A shrieking wail begins. Needle #2 goes in. Screaming continues. Needle #3 goes in the other leg. More cacophony. Then I picked her up and she quieted down, probably because she was tired to begin with. Meanwhile Kristen couldn't bring herself to watch any of this. But now all is well. At least until her four-month checkup when we do this all over again. You can see one of her band-aids (Taz!) in this picture:

Grandma and Grandpa Moyer and Aunt Sarah are in town this week. Grandpa and I have a bunch of projects around the house lined up. We've already painted the dining room and will be adding a chair rail and crown moulding to it. We're also doing crown moulding in the living room. If the weather turns out to be mild, we are going to put in a paver patio outside. If there's blistering heat, then we will attempt to replace the two bathroom sinks. We're also going to replace the light fixture in the kitchen. I say "we", but really I'm just along for the ride.

They have also assured us that they will take care of Carolyn one night so that Kristen and I can go out on a date together. We're planning to go see The Dark Knight, because seriously, what's more romantic than Batman?

Notes at seven weeks: Sleeping, bathing, and smiling

Carolyn was born 7 weeks ago today. My, oh my, how time flies. Here are her latest accomplishments and oddities.
  • We've started putting her down for naps in her crib in the nursery, which has actually gone really well. As I type this, she has been sleeping soundly for an hour and a half. We used to either hold her or put her in the Moses basket for naps, but that was getting difficult. She even slept a couple stretches in the crib overnight last night, which was very nice. She was beginning to look big in the bassinet, but now she looks so tiny in that big crib. We tend to stick her in a corner because she likes to be pressed up against something when she sleeps.
  • We've started using a white noise CD (which I made after finding an MP3 on the Internet and stretching it out to 80 minutes) when she's sleeping. It's a soothing noise for her, and it has the bonus of masking other sounds in the house that would wake her up. So far, so good.
  • For Carolyn's first several baths, Kristen was in charge of doing the washing, and I would pitch in as the sidekick for some rinsing. Every single time, Carolyn would cry throughout. Last night, we switched things up -- I did the washing, Kristen was the sidekick rinser -- and believe it or not, Carolyn almost seemed to enjoy her bath. Go figure.
  • On a related note, Carolyn behaves very well when I dress her, but tends to scream and fuss when Kristen dresses her. Who knows why. Just one of those things I guess.
  • And the biggest recent news is that Carolyn smiles at us all the time now. Check out the video below.

An outing on the Fourth of July

Yesterday morning, Kari called us up to invite us over for the Fourth of July. Our initial response was "Thanks, but no thanks", anticipating that an hour and a half each way was not going to go over very well with our little girl. But then we reconsidered, because if we don't do it now, when will we start?

So we timed things such that we left right after Carolyn fell asleep after nursing, and actually, she slept for the entire car ride, which was awesome. We made a quick stopover at Grandma and Papa Hyland's house, where Carolyn slept some more, then we changed her into her adorable patriotic outfit.

We then went over to John and Kari's house. Carolyn proceeded to sleep in the car, then sleep the entire time we were there, until we put her down in her Moses basket. At this point, we were planning on scarfing down some burgers and shuttling home while she was still sleeping. Of course, she woke up about 15 seconds after we put her down, and then she was awake for a little while so that everyone could play with her.

She nursed and fell asleep again before we made the trek back home (during which she slept all but the last 20 minutes or so).

Of course, the upshot to all of this is that she slept terribly last night, and was wide awake from 2:30am to 4:30am, which was just great.

(There are more pictures from John and Kari's house in the Summer 2008 photo album if you're interested.)

Carolyn meets some cousins

This past weekend, we were paid a visit by Carolyn's cousins Megan, Emily, Kelly, and Jake, and her Uncle John and Aunt Kari. They all seemed to like her just fine, and she was actually awake to interact a little bit.

Jake is about 2 months older than Carolyn, but he's twice her size! Here are a few pictures, and you can also check out the new Summer 2008 album, which we'll be adding to all summer long.
